Lota jar

This type of jug without handles is known as a lota and is typical of India where it is used to store or transfer small quantities of water.

In the Indian subcontinent in particular, where cleaning with water is the usual method of maintaining hygiene, these jugs are commonly used in baths but are also used for religious purposes by both Hindus in their pujas and offerings and by Muslims as part of their ritual ablutions.

Apart from their hygienic or ritual uses, the jugs, being made of metal, are ideal for preserving cold water.
