Clay Mermaid

Inspired by the Tlanchana, the mythical mermaid of pre-Hispanic origin, this piece celebrates one of Mexico’s oldest traditions.

The legend of the Tlanchana arose in pre-Hispanic times, when central Mexico was a lake-filled region rich in fish. It was said that her appearance could foretell a good catch or lure a fisherman into romance; however, if he failed to return her affection, the Tlanchana would entwine him with her tail and drag him to the depths of the lake.

Each figure is hand-modeled in clay, carefully painted and glazed, and includes a loop on the back for easy hanging on the wall.

As a handmade item, every mermaid is unique and may show slight variations.
